Presentation of the school

Extérieur Like Lyon, Strasbourg and St Germain en Laye, Grenoble has a number of public primary schools offering international sections. The aim of these schools is to help integrate pupils arriving from abroad into the French school system.
These International schools are non fee-paying. The Ecole Elementaire de la Houille Blanche caters for English and German speaking children of primary school level (between the ages of 6 and 11). Other primary schools in Grenoble provide international schooling for speakers of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic.

innenFrom CP to CM2, each class is made up of children from the three sections at Houille Blanche: French, English and German. Lessons in French as a foreign language are also available (Cours de rattrapage integré or CRI) where children newly arrived from abroad benefit from a few hours of lessons a week, helping them get to grips with the French language and to help them settle in at school. In all three sections, the daily lessons and teaching of the general programme take place in French. The children in the English and German sections have one hour’s lesson a day in their native language with a native speaker.

In 2008-2009, the 376 pupils in the school represent 119 French speakers, 115 German speakers and 142 English speakers.
